The Region Field: How an Illinois Mobile IP Is Located

Published

Every IP lookup returns several location fields, and most people read only the first one they see, usually the city. For the work our customers bring to Illinois Proxies, that is the wrong field to start with. A payment check, a state licence gate or an Illinois-targeted campaign compares the region, the subdivision a database records as the state. This guide is about that field: how a commercial database decides that a carrier address belongs to Illinois, why the town beneath it is lost on the way, the uncommon cases where the region names a neighbouring state, and a routine for confirming the reading before you depend on it.

Why the state, and not the town, is the unit that counts

We sell an Illinois identity. Our hardware stands in a single Chicago rack, and the promise we make is that a line agrees with an account, a business or a campaign that is registered in the state. Whether a given lookup prints Chicago, a suburb or no city at all is secondary for that purpose. What must hold is that the region says Illinois and the country says United States.

Customers who need a precise city reading are better served by a city product, and we say so before they pay. The remainder of this article assumes the state is what you are measuring.

How a database arrives at Illinois

An address carries no position of its own. Vendors such as MaxMind (GeoIP2), IP2Location, DB-IP and ipinfo assign one by inference. They consult the registration a carrier filed for each block, the routing that announces it, any RFC 8805 geofeed the carrier publishes, timing measurements taken from servers in known places, and observations from services that see the address alongside a location a user consented to share.

For a mobile block, nearly all of that evidence points at the carrier gateway serving the region. When the gateway and the registration both sit in Illinois, the region field says Illinois with high confidence. That is the ordinary case for our lines.

What the gateway removes

A modem in our rack exchanges radio signals with nearby towers, yet the public internet never sees those towers. Traffic is carried inside the carrier network to a regional exit point and translated there through carrier-grade NAT, so one public address represents a great many ordinary subscribers at once.

By the time an address is visible, any trace of a town, a postal code or a street has gone. This is why an Illinois line reads at the metro or state level and never finer, and why we decline to claim otherwise. Where a database prints a postal code, treat it as a label for the area, not as a location for the device. No seller of mobile proxies can honestly offer a zip-level reading.

When the region field names another state

It is uncommon, but it happens, and it is worth understanding before it surprises you. Carriers organise their networks independently. One may register its Illinois pool at a Chicago gateway; another may serve the area from a hub across a state line and register the addresses there. Some carriers pool several states together, so a rotation can occasionally draw an address that a database places in a neighbouring state, even though the modem has not moved.

Timing contributes as well. Vendors refresh on different schedules and carriers transfer ranges between markets, so one database may be a revision behind another for a period. A lone service reporting Indiana or Wisconsin while the others report Illinois is usually that lag, not a fault on the line.

It also helps to remember that real phones on the same carrier receive the same addresses and carry on using their apps without complaint. Platforms tolerate a mobile address moving within one carrier's network, much as they tolerate a subscriber who flies to another state. What attracts scrutiny is a single account, or a single browser fingerprint, appearing in two separate places simultaneously.

Signals that should agree with Illinois

The region field is checked alongside the browser. A site can read the time zone, the language preference and, with permission, the HTML5 geolocation API. That interface answers from the device's own GPS or Wi-Fi scanning and takes no account of the proxy. WebRTC may disclose network details unless the browser is configured to route or suppress it.

For an Illinois identity, the zone should be America/Chicago and the leading language en-US. A profile left on Eastern European time beside an Illinois carrier address is inconsistent in a way any fraud layer can notice. GoLogin and Undetectable.io allow the time zone, the geolocation response and WebRTC behaviour to be set to match the line, and we recommend using one profile per line.

A verification routine for state-level work

We suggest the following on the day you buy, and again whenever a platform behaves unexpectedly.

  • Look up the address with the IP checker available under Tools on our site and record the region field specifically.
  • Repeat it at ipinfo.io, then at browserleaks.com/ip, the latter showing several vendors in one view.
  • Accept the region on which most services agree; a single dissenting state is normally a stale entry.
  • Rotate once and repeat, so that you know how that carrier's pool reads rather than assuming it.
  • If the region repeatedly reads outside Illinois, contact support. We can recommend the carrier whose ranges currently read as Illinois, and changing carrier is free through the self-service location move in the dashboard.

Frequently asked

Which lookup field should I compare for Illinois work?

The region or subdivision field. It is the one state-level checks use. The city field is useful context but varies more between databases.

Can a rotation take my line out of Illinois?

The modem never moves, but where a carrier pools several states, a new address can occasionally be one a database files under a neighbouring state. Rotating again, or changing carrier, normally restores an Illinois reading.

A lookup shows a postal code. Is that where my line is?

No. Databases sometimes attach a postal code to a carrier range as a placeholder for the area. The address belongs to a shared gateway and carries no street or zip information.

Will support choose a carrier for me?

Yes. Tell us which reading your work requires and we will suggest the carrier that currently gives it, then you can switch from the dashboard at no charge.

USA mobile proxies on hardware we own

Eight US metros of real 4G and 5G carrier IPs, offering unlimited rotation, sticky sessions and HTTP(S) or SOCKS5. Begin with two hours at $2 or a day at $6; hours already bought count toward that day.
